Toledo, Ohio

Cindy Putman protests outside the H.H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home on Tremainsville Road and with good reason.

A deeply disturbing story has unfolded in this Toledo funeral home, one owned by Houston-based Service Corporation International. In yet another scandal for the largest funeral corporation, an employee with H.H. Birkenkamp funeral home has been arrested after police say he sexually molested a corpse. Lawrence J. Clement, 57, was taken into custody after the victim’s family notified police.

Lawrence J. Clement Sexually Molested Corpse

According to the Toledo Police Department, employees with the H.H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home called the 51-year-old victim’s family members to report that one of their staff members had sexually abused her corpse. Another employee allegedly witnessed the sexual assault and threatened to go to police unless the family was contacted. The funeral home offered to waive the $11,000 funeral bill if they agreed not to call police. The family rejected the offer, contacted police and transferred the victim’s body to another funeral home.

Specific details about the abuse were not released, other than “sexual molestation.” Lisa Marshall, a spokeswoman for Houston-based Service Corporation International (NYSE:SCI), says the employee has been fired.

Clement was booked into the Lucas County Jail and charged with sexual abuse of a corpse.

Service Corporation International funeral homes can be identified by the Dignity Memorial Brand.

Funeral Home Running Without Electricity, Bones on the Roof and Decomposing Corpses Inside

Chicago, Illinois

Family members and police were recently gathered outside of Carter Funeral Chapel in Chicago. This time, however, they were not on-hand to attend a funeral. Instead, they were demanding to know what has happened to their relatives remains after police found the funeral home in a ‘state of disarray’.

Police first discovered deeply disturbing evidence outside of the funeral home. Bones were found on the roof and it was discovered that this particular funeral home had no working electricity. The funeral home had previously been shut-down after it was discovered that frozen water bottles were being used to preserve corpses.

Police said they found a back door off its hinges, confirmed no power or heating inside the building and corpses in ‘various states of preparation’ (otherwise meaning decomposed).

Police Say Russian Man Found Living With Female Corpses

Police in Russia have detained a man after discovering that he had at least 20 dressed-up female corpses hidden in his apartment.

According to authorities, historian Anatoly Moskvin, 45, would sneak into cemeteries during the dark of night to dig up the corpses, then dress them up in his apartment.

Photos taken by the tabloid publication lifenews.ru indicate that Moskvin clothed the corpses, all belonging to women who died between the ages of 15 to 25, in women’s clothes to look almost doll-like.

Some sources report that as many as 26 corpses were found in Moskvin’s residence.

Funeral Directors Leave Corpse In Supermarket Parking Lot While Getting a Cup of Tea

Shoppers Found Corpse

News from the UK

A funeral care provider has been accused of lacking respect after three workers left a corpse in a coffin in supermarket car park – while they went inside for a cup of tea.

The men abandoned the coffin, which had a wreath on top, outside a Morrisons store in Tamworth for more than 20 minutes while they took their break.

Shoppers Karen Plant, 53, and her daughter Liz, 28, were so shocked by their actions that they stormed into the cafe and confronted the undertakers.

But the men – dressed in black top hats and tails – denied they had done anything wrong, claiming they needed a snack after their ‘long journey’.

Community nurse Liz said: ‘It’s really upsetting to think the body of someone’s loved one was in that coffin and it had been shoved in a car park before it was laid to rest.

‘I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s a complete lack of respect.

‘At first I thought the hearse must be on its way back from a funeral but the coffin had a wreath on top of it.

‘There were lots of official-looking papers scattered on the dash board which detailed the funeral arrangements.

‘They were in full view so anyone could have seen them. It was shocking.

Whatever Happened To …The Embalmer Who Blew The Whistle on Service Corporation International?

Steven Napper had had enough, and in his case that meant he had seen too many bodies haphazardly placed in a Falls Church funeral home’s garage, deceased veterans resting on racks for months awaiting burial, and practices that were generally disrespectful to the dead.

So the embalmer — a retired Maryland state trooper — chose to become a high-profile whistleblower, telling Virginia authorities about abuses he had witnessed within the nation’s largest funeral services company. He then explained it all in a front-page Washington Post investigation in 2009. He left National Funeral Home and its parent Service Corporation International just as the situation reached its peak.

Then the Virginia Board for Funeral Directors and Embalmers found SCI responsible for inappropriate treatment of bodies and issued one of the harshest fines it has ever meted out. Virginia legislators, spurred by what Napper had witnessed, changed Virginia laws to require funeral homes to follow stricter methods of storing and handling bodies.

Napper has since opened a funeral home of his own.

Man Charged With Murdering Missing Teen Boy and Having Sex With Corpse

Louisville, Kentucky

Police in Louisville have arrested a man they say murdered a missing teen, then had sex with the boy’s  corpse.

The family of 18-year-old Andrew Compton reported him missing on Oct 30th after he had not been seen or heard from in two days. It was later found out that on the day he went missing, he had used his computer to communicate with 40-year-old Gregory O’Bryan. When questioned by the police,  O’Bryan admitted he had met with Compton and that they had engaged in sexual activity at O’Bryan’s apartment. Afterwards he says the teen left on foot.

Last week police executed a search warrant on O’Bryan’s apartment causing him to change his story. He told police that Compton had died while they were having sex and that he had continued having sex with Compton anyway before disposing of the corpse. O’Bryan was arrested and charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Compton’s parents had created a Facebook Page in hopes of getting information on his whereabouts and stated they had warned Compton about him meeting strangers online. But obviously, he didn’t stop. And as a result, it cost him his life.
